Riding:

As with all mountain trail rides you need to have a reasonable level of fitness and there are places where you will need to lead your horse.  It is necessary to be comfortable at all paces.  You will be asked to specify your riding experience, weight and height when booking.  The average riding time per day is 6 hours.

We have two short break rides running throughout the year.

Option 1 - Poqueira Valley Ride

On this ride, you return to the village of Bubion each night. Dinner is included on the night of arrival, thereafter we are happy to recommend and make reservations for the local restaurants.  On the days you ride a full picnic using fresh local produce will be provided.  Please let us know if you are vegetarian or have any special dietary requirements. The price for option 1 is £550pp. Single room supplement €75.

Itinerary

Day 1

Those of you who have arranged to be collected from Malaga airport will be pickup at prearranged time and driven to the village of Bubion; just over a two hour drive.

While in Bubion you will be staying in the comfortable Casa La Sevillana. Your host (Dallas Love) will meet you at 8.30pm and take you for dinner in one of the local restaurants, within easy walking distance of your accommodation.

Day 2

Approximately 5 hours.

After a relaxed breakfast, we drive up to the stables (5 kilometres from the village) to meet the horses.

Once everyone has been introduced to their horse we start the ride with a steep climb through evergreen Holm oaks and pasture lands to join the main forestry track into the National Park.

This track allows for some steady trots and canters as it climbs high above the valley Poqueira to join one of the old bridle paths winding through pine woods and Summer pastures to an altitude of approximately 2,300 metres.

Picnic lunch at the tree line approximately 2,400 metres, spectacular views down the Barranco Habali, across the Contraviesa mountains to the Mediterranean and on a clear day Morocco.

Descending on one of the firebreaks we pass the remains of trenches and gun placements from the Civil War (1936-1939), and down through oak woods to the main forestry track leading back to the stables.

Day 3

Riding at a lower elevation (between 1,300 and 1,800 meters) we follow a combination of forestry tracks and bridle paths through pine, oak and chestnut woods.

During the course of the morning in addition to the woodlands we pass through pretty terraced farms and orchards above the villages of Pitres and Portugos.

After lunch we return to the stables on one of the main forestry tracks offering opportunities for some good canters.

Day 4

Today, the highest ride of your stay takes you to the base of the Mulhacen (at 3,486 m the highest mountain on the mainland).  During the morning a steep ascent on old Moorish bridle paths and sheep tracks over rough and steep terrain, crossing Moorish irrigation channels and snow fed streams. There maybe places you have to dismount and lead your horse.

After a picnic lunch by one of the mountain streams we have a much gentler descent on dirt roads down through pine woods to the control point of the National Park, where we join a small path leading through the woods and down to the stables.

Because today is largely climbing there are no canters.  The scenery and the paths are quite breathtaking.

Farewell drink with your guides.

Day 5

After breakfast transfer to Malaga airport at pre-arranged time.

4 nights accommodation, breakfast, lunch on three days, dinner on night of arrival, 3 full days riding. The price is based on a double or single room, if you require a single room there is a supplement of 75 Euros.

Day 3

Today we ride to the whitewashed village of Trevelez, the highest village in Spain and famous for its air cured hams.

During the morning the old bridle paths wind their way through chestnut woods, orchards and terraces above the villages of La Taha.

After a picnic lunch we join the main forestry track through the pine woods, here there are opportunities for some nice canters.

The final descent into the village is on a narrow path and it is necessary to lead the horses for 15 minutes.

Trevelez still has cattle and sheep, the cattlemen and their horses heading out to the hills is a common sight in the early morning and late evening.

Overnight in hotel La Fragua, dinner at local restaurant. 5 and 6 hours riding, approximately 28 kilometres.

Day 4

Returning to Bubion we follow the forestry track and then the Sulayr path through oak woods and open pasture lands high above the village.

Picnic at 2.300 meters with stunning views over the Mediterranean, the valley of Trevelez and the foothills of the Contraviesa.

During the afternoon we leave the open pasture lands behind and follow the path descending through pine woods to the stables.

The diversity of bridle-paths and forest tracks allows you three days to explore many of the more inaccessible ravines and valleys of this mountainous region.  From the high summer pastures and streams fed by the snow melt of the Mulhacen, down to the white-washed villages of the valleys. The routes are so planned that you ride over totally different terrain each day. One day you follow small paths high into the mountains, with spectacular views on a clear day of the Mediterranean.  On other days you will take slightly lower routes where the many forest tracks allow for a faster pace.
