It is this viticulture (the Latin name given to the skill, science and knowledge of grapes) that is among the various things that make Saumur so special. Such was the success of this wine production and appreciation over the decades, that wealth poured from all over France and the elegant Chateau de Saumur changed hands between kings on many occasions.
But not least of Saumur’s appeal, the long established and world renowned National School of Equitation is prided for the quality and high standards of the horses. This prestigious academy has been passing on knowledge through its elite masters of riding for centuries, and it is this that you will be able to experience first hand. The Cadre Noir, currently numbering around forty three expert men and women, are the tutors who have dedicated their careers to horses, and mastering the art of riding, and their skill is world renowned.
Day One
Arrive into a regional airport (Nantes, Poitiers or Tours) all within an hour and a half drive of Saumur, and settle into your chosen accommodation. Alternatively you can fly into Paris and travel an hour by train on the TGV to Saumur. You have a wide range of available accommodation for this trip including B&B’s, apartments and hotels ranging from three to five star with spa. Settle in, relax, dine and rest. Perhaps indulge in a pre-booked massage this evening, or save such luxury for after a long day of riding.
Day Two
After a good breakfast, begin your day with a trip to the National Riding School. Here you may witness first hand the Cadre Noir in all their marvellous spectacle. Their vast knowledge and carefully refined skill are world class.and you will have the opportunity to experience this. The demonstrations will include the famous aerial jumps that will be performed before you, and afterwards you will have a guided tour of these excellent facilities which have long provided an integral base to these equestrian connoisseurs. This tour will also delve into the rich history belonging to both the Cadre Noir and their headquarters. The functions and aspirations of these gifted horse riders are to document and preserve their tradition, research technique and compete (members of the Cadre Noir have achieved many Olympic gold medals). Meanwhile, this afternoon enjoy the stunning Saumur scenery from where other than on horseback!
Day Three
After breakfast this morning you have the chance to enjoy more riding through the Loire Valley, where the castle stands proud and pretty, with a beautiful scenic backdrop of the Loire river, expansive vineyards and well kept horse facilities. We propose a trek of three hours, during which you shall ride along the banks of the Loire and through the ancient woods and vineyards of the area which are particularly stunning. If you prefer, this afternoon you could sample some of the other activities available in Saumur; a boat ride along the river Loire, cycling, visiting wineries for tastings, a romantic horse-drawn carriage ride through the vast scenery, hot air balloon rides, golfing or even tour the other exquisite castles of the area. The choice is totally yours!
Day Four
There is a wide variety of exciting ways to spend your final day here in Saumur, so there should be something for everyone. You can choose the type of horse to ride out on your last excursion through this rich landscape, with a choice from either a Lusitano, Thoroughbred, Hanoverian or Selle Francais. In this instance we propose a slightly longer ride out, four hours, including a last ride along the banks of the Loire River so that the beauty may be engrained on your memory, as well as a mounted visit to Saumur’s own chateau. Eat out tonight and enjoy fine wine of the local area as your holiday closes slowly to an end, but not to worry, there is always next year.....
Day Five
After a wonderful trip, you will no doubt be ready to head home, but the memories of Saumur will stay with you forever. Bon voyage!
