Ponies have roamed wild in the UK for thousands of years. The rugged moorland terrain of Dartmoor is home to the Dartmoor pony and herds of wild ponies can still be found running free over the wide expanses of the National Park. Over time this tough breed have served as pack ponies, being used for light farm and carriage work; today they are bred for the show ring and as general riding ponies.
